“Feminine Mystique: 50 years later” Reading Series 2013
Posted by MB - February 22, 2013
2013 is Project Y’s Year of Women!
The plays featured in our February 2013 New York New Play Festival all delved into issues taken up by the feminist cause including race, gender roles and equality, each piece treating them in dramatically different ways. This theme adheres to the company’s mission to expand the scope of dramatic performance and the public that it serves. Says co-Artistic Director Michole Biancosino, “This year represents a commitment to new, under-represented voices in the theatre, with the goal of creating work that will in turn develop new audiences.”
2013 marks the 50th anniversary of Betty Friedan’s watershed treatise The Feminine Mystique, a book that launched the second-wave feminism in this country. Accordingly, we are launching our yearly themed reading series around themes of women’s changing lives: “Feminine Mystique: 50 years later” Reading Series features plays by and about women who challenge traditional notions of what it means to be a woman today, as we look back on our history.
